Panic Attacks: Helping Others

Health And Fitness : Top Health Tips

If someone around you has a panic attack then as well as the stress that they experience, it can also be quite worrying for those around you - particularly with a full on panic attack. What can you do to help someone suffering a panic attack?

There are two elements you can try to help with. One is understanding, and the second is focus on and control of breathing - this can help to calm someone down and relieve their panic attack.

If there is a cause to the attack, then first try to remove the person from that situation so that which is causing them the anxiety is not at hand. Talking in a calm, controlled manner can help people to get a grid.

Get them to start counting and focussing on theirs breaths. Gradually try to get them to slow down their breathing; they usually will be gasping for air as though they cannot breathe. Therefore focussing on controlled breathing is a key step in helping those with a panic attack.

Do not walk off and leave someone alone once you have started to help them. One tip to help them focus in on their breaths is to get them to press one nostril in with a finger and focus on breathing through one nostril.

Because all the air is coming through one nostril the person breathing in is much more aware of their lungs being filled with air and can feel the affect of the breath - so this is something that can be quite useful.

Finally if they are still exhibiting the panic attack symptoms after ten minutes and are not calming down, then get medical advice straight away.
