Part 2b: Interview Mistakes: Appearance

Jobs : Successful Job Search Interview Process

Scruffy or unsuitable appearance. For instance, if you have lots of tattoos on display, this is likely to ensure that most companies do not offer you a job.

Therefore if you have some cover them up, and make sure if you get new ones that you can cover them up. Even a small tattoo somewhere visible, like the base of the hand, is enough to stop most people employing you since you don't fit in with their dress culture.

Also if you have a lot of piercings in locations other than your ears, you should consider removing them for the interview. If you are a male with very long hair, then in many companies this may not meet their grooming code.

If it is raining, then make sure that you take an umbrella, and do not turn up soaking wet.

Take a comb with you so you can brush your hair if it has been windy, and generally ensure that you can cover any appearance emergency that might present itself. As we said above, it is best to play it safe - that way you won't go far wrong on the appearance front.

If you want to be an individual and make a statement when it comes to how you dress, then that's great - but just do it outside the companies time and outside the interview, at your own leisure in your own home! Heartache and lack of jobs is the result of displaying your individuality the rest of the time.
