Part 4a: Covering Letter: Hand Written Or Typed?

Jobs : Successful Job Search CV Covering Letter And Exams

Should I write the covering letter by hand, or type it?

If no preference is stated by the employer, then the safest bet is probably to type it.

Remember that the employer is likely to have a large number of applications, and so it should be easier for them to read it if it is typed, unless you have incredibly neat handwriting.

It will also provide a convenient base for you to use or modify in future, or if you are doing several similar covering letters for applications to several different companies, then you will find this easier than writing the same letter several times.

If you do handwrite, then make sure that you do so in your neatest writing - and that your neatest writing is legible. Whichever you do, use good quality A4 paper; very thin paper will crumble and look a little cheap.

You want to create a good impression, and more often than not the covering letter and CV is the first impression that a company will have of you.
