Part 4m: Summary Of What To Include In A Covering Letter

Jobs : Successful Job Search CV Covering Letter And Exams

So, in general, then you should do the following:

- say what you enclose (usually an accompanying CV)

- name the job that you are applying for - and get this right! If you are applying to several different companies they will often have different names for essentially the same roles. If applying to a consultancy, you may be a junior consultant, a consultant, an assistant or various other roles. get it right!

- say where you saw the job advertised (paper, magazine, via the milkround)

- if you have had any specific contact with the company or any specific reasons for applying to them in particular, remember to mention it in the covering letter, not the CV.

But if you do this, you need to be specific - they will often follow it up to check it out, but if it is just something general it will carry no weight. Did a friend or relative have a good experience of the company?

Or have you met or phoned one of their representatives before, and did this inspire you to apply to them?

Or did you read a complimentary article about them in the paper? Whatever it is, use this to show that you are enthusiasic and interested in the job

- something specific about the company that interests you? Then let them know that this is the case! For instance, perhaps their research in a particular area interests you. Let them know, it shows that you have done your research.

Also be concise. If they have a specific turn of phrase/language, then use it at times to show your familiarity with the company and ability to use their phraseology

- get someone else to read through the letter, and check it for spelling mistakes and typographical errors

- If you are applying for several roles, REMEMBER TO SIGN YOUR COVERING LETTERS!!!
