You should not skimp on practice - like anything, the longer you practice for the better and quicker you will get. If there is a time pressure of any significance, as there often is with tests, then you should make sure that you practice under exam conditions. Do not be lazy and not check the answers. Check them. Go over them. And go over them again. Make sure you understand how every answer is got to if you got the question wrong. Start looking for patterns in the questions - do they tend to require a specific sort of thought process? If so, what is this? What sort of questions are they asking and what is the reason for asking them?
