How To Patent Your Idea
Business : Running Your Business The first thing you need to find out is: is my idea really novel or has someone else got there first? You can do this free of charge on the Patent Office website, or at a public library with a patent department. If you've got the green light, go to a registered patent agent. Write down very clearly what your invention is: how it works, how it could be made, what advantages it has, and a simple drawing. Use a patent agent to get the patent - the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents will put you in touch with one. You may pay a fair fee though - between ?500 - ?1000 for a simple invention! This covers the invention for a year, so during that time you should try to find a company to buy or license your invention.
