How To Prepare For A Marathon

Sport : Athletics

Each persons training for a marathon will be different. For a serious competitor, you will already have developed your plan with your trainer or coach.

But for the thousands of part time marathon runners - fun runners - here is a suggestion of the sort of training you should do.

First, you need to start a long time in advance. For instance 16 weeks before the event is a reasonable timescale.

The key is to start gradually and work your way up. So, you should start off with one mile then add a mile each week to your running.

When you reach week 13, reduce the mileage again to ensure that you are fresh for the race.

You should aim to do just one long run each week, and in the longest run - week 13, aim to cover between 17 - 20 miles.

It is essential that you train in advance, to ensure that you have a good chance of finishing the race and of course equally to avoid injury.
