Priest

Jobs : Job Profiles

Fewer and fewer people are choosing the priesthood (Catholic religious minister) as a vocation.

This has been for many reasons, it is argued. First, less and less people in the Western world are religious in the sense that people used to be, and increasingly see religion as either irrelevant to life, or a part that is dealt with in Church on a Sunday for half an hour and then placed to the side.

With modern life placing emphasis on the superficial over the spiritual, the life of priesthood with the sacrifices it entails are not attractive to many people.

However, for those few that are attracted to the priesthood, they will need first and foremost a devout understanding and knowlege of Scripture. You will need excellent people skills, be compassionate, and as an employee of God you may work all sorts of hours.

As well as spiritual guidance through actually saying Mass, there will also the Church itself to maintain, committees to organise, and a varied set of other interests - for instance working with the local Catholic schools.

To become a priest you will need to undergo several years training and also of course make vows to the priesthood.

If you wish to become a priest, first speak to your friends and family and decide whether it really is for you - as a genuine vocation it is a life changing decision. Then speak to your local priest who will be able to advise you on the best route to becoming a priest.
