When putting up a shelf (or something similar), instead of using expensive Rawlplugs, use old pencil stubs. Cheaper and just as effective!

Good idea, Norah: when I've been really stuck, I've successfully used tightly rolled-up newspaper to make a rawlplug.

I've also used a few turns of Sellotape or masking tape to "build up" a rawlplug which was too small for the job.
