Create a links page on your site, and link to ten or so other relevant sites to your sector that your visitors will find useful. Then contact the webmasters of those sites and ask if they would consider linking back to you. In this way you harbour relations with others, get good links, and the benefits that are associated with this. Search engines tend to think that a site with a lot of links is more important than one with less links and in many cases this is right. Note that context is important - there is no point asking for links from hundreds of irrelevant sites as this will if anything harm your ranking.
