How To Re-write URLs

Computing : Web Sites

If you want to make your URLs look static rather than long dynamic ones with question marks in (?) then you will need to use a re-write tool that outputs clean URLs, and then your server translates to the correct format.

The best way to do this is to use something called mod rewrite, which is a module available on Apache servers that enables you to add some rules to your .htaccess file and therefore control how your URL appears.

For instance, if you have a file of format:
item.php?id=n then you could re-write this as itemn.php and have the mod-rewrite take the strain.

For more information, search for mod rewrite on Google.
