Relationship Between Gravity And Orbit Time

Education : Physics

The attractive force of gravity decreases the farther you are from an object.

The gravity of the Sun acts on both the Earth and the Moon, but because the Moon is closer to the Earth, the Moon remains in orbit around the Earth as it is closer to the Earth.

The further an object is from the body it orbits, the slower it moves due to a weaker gravitational force, and the further its orbit in terms of distance (imagine the rings of an onion just cut open to see this, with the core being the Sun and the layers of the onion each showing the orbit of a body).

Interestingly the Earth is actually losing the Moon, it is slowly slipping away, and eventually will be lost altogether!
