How To Request A Salary Increase

Career : Career Development

This is one awkward scenario - you want more money but don't want to sour relations with your boss. These negotiations are always going to be delicate so you must approach in a sensitive and business like way.

Here's what to do:

Book some one-to-one time with your boss, and ensure it is in a quiet place with just the two of you. You want no distractions. Pick a time where the boss is likely to be receptive and not stressed - e.g. start of the day.

The key you need is INFORMATION - find out what others in the company with your skills and experience are getting, or what the market average is for someone with your skills. Assuming this is higher, you have a great case.

Present the information as to what your job is worth in the marketplace to your employer (in a delicate way) and request a raise, stating an amount a little higher than you would be happy with.

If the request is granted, great, but keep it to yourself - do not boast to others. If the request is not granted, try another tack - for instance ask for free gym membership or more holidays - some other tangible benefit.
