Most companies have an 'about us' section to their site, which will have all the useful background on the company and what they do. If not, then carry out some web searches on the company and that should turn up some information of interest on the company. Also keep an eye out for any information on that company in the press. If you want to find out more about the financial side of a company, and they are large enough to be listed, then their annual report can be an excellent source of information for you.
