You need to start several months in advance by starting to go on training runs. You should build up slowly and never actually run full marathon length until the race itself, but build up to around 18 miles or so if you can in your training runs. It really takes a lot of effort and dedication and you need to ensure that physically you are up to it - certainly it is worth consulting your doctor before training for a marathon to see if there is any reason why you should not do it. Also note that equipment is important - get some great quality training shoes that are comfortable and socks as they will be with you for many miles along the way!
