Running your business well undoubtedly encompasses many skills. Not least in the rank of importance are determination and hard work. If you have employees, then motivation and inspiration are also great assets to have.

In terms of your own personal skillset, then there are two things that stand out.

The first is that you must run your business so as to play to your own individual strengths. At the end of the day, no one cares more about your business than you. So you need the business to be aligned to your strengths particularly since you set the agenda and ultimately are accountable for the company.

The second key skill is being able to delegate the areas where you are weak to others who want to help. These two skills combined are extremely powerful and will greatly aid your chances of success.

That's because the mentality of running your own business is different to that of working for someone else. When working for a mainstream company, in most roles they want clones who are well rounded in all areas - hence development will focus more on 'developmental areas'.

However, when you run your own business, the most important area is your strengths - playing to these every day is crucial. Your weaknesses can only be developed, true, but if you can delegate many of these then that will be a great help - you cannot juggle all the responsibilities of owning a company and develop all your weak areas at once!
