How To Soothe A Black Eye

Health And Fitness : Top Health Tips

THAT UGLY SHINER

Doc says:

So Johnny reaches for the ball to fall cleanly in his glove. Instead gets it smack in the eye. Accidents do happen. Tomorrow Johnny will be wearing testimony to this.

A dark swollen black eye.
Don?t laugh . Black eyes are nothing to snicker at. Your child could have suffered a concussion , or serious damage to the eye.
So it is important to see a doc.

Once doc says everything is a go, here are some things to help soothe the hurt.

Chill Out.
Use cold compresses during the first 24 ? 48 hours after an injury. Use crushed ice in a plastic bag, covered by a towel.

NEVER PUT ICE DIRECTLY ON THE SKIN.

Off And On.
You should gently apply the cold intermittently to your child?s eye ? 5 ? 10 minutes on - 10 ? 15 minutes off. Then on again, and so on.
The cold shrinks blood vessels, and decreases bleeding into the surrounding tissues.
If at a social function, and no ice available. Use a cold can of soda.

Switch To Warm.
48- hours later after an injury apply warm compresses. A towel or washcloth soaked, in hot water and then wrung out. Apply these on intermittent basis too. The warm compresses help the body, reabsorb the leakage of blood that has occurred.
This mean s the discoloration will vanish a bit more quickly.

Pain Relief.
If your child is in pain, give himChildren?s Tylenol. Check the package for correct dosage for age and weight. Under two years see doc.

DO NOT SUBSTITUTE ASPIRIN, OR IBUPROFEN .
Both of these drugs have some anticlotting properties, and can lead to increased bleeding.

Sleep Heads Up.
When your child goes to bed the first night, prop up his head, with a few extra pillows. This can help keep the pressure, and swelling to a minimum.

Turn The Other Cheek .
Encourage your child to sleep on the uninjured side. This could not only hurt, but could make the swelling worse.

PARENTS HELP TO AVOID INJURED EYES.
If your child is active in sports, and there is a high possibility of eye or elbow injury.
Then go an get him some protective goggles, with unbreakable polycarbonate lenses. These are a must. Or if you child already wears glasses, have them made with unbreakable polycarbonate lenses.
Especially if playing racquetball, double tennis, baseball, squash, badminton, and the like.
