Well, the best way is to actually have a positive mental attitude. Many people naturally shoot themselves in the foot worrying before reading or thinking that they won't understand what they read. Rather have a literal deep breath before and be positive. Scan read the text for key words and terms and the key items in the list, so look out for tell tale signs of the information that you need to know and pick out the salient points with your eyes. This of course only comes through practice so don't worry if you find it a little hard at first. If you do get a little confused, then think of it as curiosity to drive you to go on and find out more about the topic at hand and have your questions answered that way.
