How To Spot A Fake £1 Coin
Money : Back To Basics There are loads of fake £1 coins floating around the UK at the moment. Here's how to spot one. If the coin date is quite old but it still looks fairly new then this could be a tell tale sign. The back design does not match the official design for the year which it was issued. Check the Royal Mint website for more details on this. The letters or inscription on the edge of the coin does not match the stated year. The Counterfeit Coin Guide will explain more about this. The designs may also not be as well defined and therefore faded. The alignment of the design is at an off angle, so if you hold the coin with the Queens head up right and flip it over, the other side should be the right way up as well, otherwise it is a fake. The lettering may be uneven or badly spaced. Fake coins are often more yellow or golden in colour than a real one. They can also be thinner or lighter in weight too.
