How To Spot And Treat Heat Stroke And Heat Exhaustion

Usually the first symptom is thirst. Then a loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, and general flu like symptoms, feeling like nausea, and vomiting.

In more severe cases the heart may race, and concentration may become more difficult.

Get Out Of The Sun.
This is very critical for a person already suffering heat exhaustion. Otherwise the body temp will continue to rise, even if resting, and drinking water.?

Drink Water
It?s the best beverage to turn to, for hydration. Slowly does it, no gulping. Next time load up on water first, then go out into the sun. When you say your thirsty, you?re already dehydrated.

Eat More Fruits And Vegetables.
They have a fairly high water content, and good salt balance.

Drink Gatorade.
It?s the best known source for ball players. They sweat heavily, and lose potassium and salt.

Do Not Use Salt Tablets.
The increased salt in the stomach, keeps fluid there longer, which leaves less fluid available for necessary sweat production.

Now Let?s Get This Straight.
There is heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
If you have heat exhaustion, the worst you will get is confused. Now if you have trouble walking, or are unconscious that is heat stroke. Both need a doc's attention. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between them.

Splash The Person With Water.
Don?t immerse them in cold water. The splashing will evaporate on the skin more quickly, and have a cooling effect.

Move The Person If Possible.
Try to get him into an air conditioned room.

Force Fluids.
Water is best providing the person is conscious.

Know Who Is At An Increased Risk.
Infants are more vulnerable , because the sweat glands are not fully developed. Also older people do not hydrate well.
People on certain medications. Such as high blood pressure. Can interfere with hydration.

Avoid Alcohol.
Booze will fast forward dehydration.

Avoid caffeine.
It speeds dehydration, and makes you sweat more than normal.

Go Slow.
What ever you do outside, you need to do it much slower, when it?s hot.

Pour On The Cold.
Douse your head and neck whenever possible, while outside with cold water. The cold water will evaporate, and cool you off.

Be Your Own Fan.
Get a newspaper, or whatever you have an wave it. Just keep yourself cool.

Beat The Sun.
Do whatever you have to outdoors early or late. Start work at daylight. Then knock off around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Or wait until evening.

Give The Weather Man Some Credit.
When it comes to summertime heat and humity the weatherman is usually correct.
If he says it?s going to be hot enough, to fry an egg on the street. Do not make that your day to paint.

Get A Hat.
You need one that will shade your neck, and is ventilated. A wide brim with lots of tiny holes will do nicely. Your blood vessels in your head and neck, are very close to the skin surface. Therefore you tend to lose or gain heat there very quickly. The top of the head is also very sensitive. Especially if people are bald or balding.

Carry A Spare.
If your shirt gets wet from perspiration. Remove it and wash as soon as possible.
The dried salt from your sweat impairs the breathing quality of your shirt.

Wear Cotton- Polyester Blends.
They breathe better than the shirts that are 100 % cotton.. Or 100 % tightly woven nylon.

Wear Light Colors.
Light colors reflect the heat. Dark colors absorb the heat.
