How To Stay Safe On Facebook

Computing : Web Sites

Social networks sometimes display too much information to the wrong people, and as idendity theft is becoming more common, you should take some steps to protect your privacy.

Dont add or accept people you haven't met. Hide your profile from the public, by going to Account, then Privacy Settings, Profile Info, and adjust your settings for each category.

Also ensure you cant be found via a search engine. Select Only Friends to see your Facebook search results and check that the box for public search results is unticked.

Facebook often hand over your details to other companies, mainly for marketing purposes, unless you tell the otherwise.

To prevent Facebook from sharing your details, go to Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and websites. Next to ‘Instant Personalisation Pilot Program’ click ‘Edit setting’. The box at the bottom should not be ticked. To avoid appearing in any online adverts, go to Account > Account Settings > Facebook Adverts. Select ‘no one’ on ‘Allow ads on platform pages to show my information to’ and ‘Show my social actions in Facebook ads to’.

Never share your password with anyone, and dont click save on public computers. Avoid putting your full date of birth in your profile, as identity thefts can use this to steal your identity much more easily.

Never put your home address on your profile, and try not to advertise you are going on holiday etc, as thieves can target your house during this time.
