Staying Safe Abroad

Travel : Travel Tips

Whilst we all go on holiday to relax and have some fun, this means from time to time we can forget about basic safety, but this is a mistake.

Almost all major towns and cities have crime problems, but in our own country we may be more aware of this and know what to expect, and therefore prepare accordingly.

On holiday you should also remain vigilant. This means taking all the normal precautions you would at home - keeping money safe and locked away deep in a pocket or in a bag.

Also never walk around on your own in unfamiliar places - just in case you get lost as much as anything else.

Don't put bags down and don't draw attention to yourself.

Try not to walk in quiet places at night even if they are meant to be safe, and of course don't go to known troublesome spots such as the tourist shopping areas where pickpockets are on the look out and have a field day.

If someone tries to engage you in conversation then the best bet is virtually always to try to ignore them and walk straight past, and they usually won't bother trying to pursue or pester you.

Also take precautions such as only carrying the money you need that day, and keep the rest somewhere safe, for instance a travel safe if on offer in the accommodation you are staying in.

Ensure that the passport is not taken everywhere with you as you can't afford to lose this if you want to get home OK!
