How To Stop A Pond Freezing Over

Gardening : Gardens

If you have a pond in the garden, then you will know a small body of water is quite likely to freeze over when the weather gets cold.

This can be bad news if you have fish in the pond or anything else that might want to come to the surface, for instance to get food.

Of course, one way to treat ice is to use hot water to get a hole in the ice.

But prevention is better than cure. Stop your garden pond icing over by placing a tennis ball in it.

Yes i have tried tennis balls, but as they soak up the water they can end up freezing to. A better idea is to use the polystyrene balls that are availble from craft shops as no water is taken up and polystyrene is a warmer material.

Polystyrene is too light and sits on the top of the water and gets frozen to the ice. When removed ,small bits remain on the ice and melt into a mess and could harm the fish.Try using a fish tank air stone and pump, switching it on full when it starts freezing. The air bubbles prevent the water from freezing, and as an added bonus oxygenates during this stagnant time.
