How To Stop Pickpockets

Miscellaneous

You hear the cry of 'stop! thief!' from the crowded, busy shopping centre. Panic stations - someone has just had their wallet pinched. So, what do you do? Instinctively you go to check that yours is alright, put your hand in the pocket and check that your wallet is still there, don't you? Well if you do this you could be playing right into the pickpockets hands. Why?

Well, when they are about to strike their target, pickpockets actually often call this out themselves, believe it or not! This is because it makes everyone else automatically feel for their money and look towards where the noise is coming from. And as a result the accomplice of the pickpocket now knows where wallets and purses are on each person in the area - and can attack from behind whilst everyone else is looking in the opposite direction!

So get ready if you hear the cry. The best tyhing to do of course is have your money close to you all the time - never in a back pocket, but always in front or inside pocket secured as much as possible - if you can, in something that is zipped up, that way no-one can really put their hand in quickly without you noticing.

There are so many easy targets out there that the pickpocket should not try and pinpoint you as their victim in such circumstances.

Similarly, if you are carrying a bag of any sort, and it contains anything at all valuable, then you should wear it diagonally across one shoulder to the other. That way, a thief can't just come along and rip it out of your hands and run off.

If you just hold it loosely, or perhaps over just one shoulder, then it is very easy when you are not suspecting anything for an assailant to simply come up from behind you, grab it and make off.
