How To Store Bananas

Food And Drink : Starters

When you are choosing a banana select the ones with green tips and a bright colour, or the dark green ones if you have time to let them ripen. Check that they are firm and quite plump, but if the skin is damaged or they are quite strong smelling then leave them as they will be overripe.

Don't put bananas in the fridge if they are not ripe or else they will never ripen. Keep them in a closed bag at room temperature if they are not ripe, and put an apple in the bag as well with them - the gases emitted by the apple will cause them to ripen quicker.

You can tell a banana is ripe when it is no longer a dark green, but a nice shade of yellow with some brown spots. When they get to this stage, you can put them in the fridge where they will store well for about a fortnight. The fridge will probably make them turn black quickly but you can still eat them when they are like that.
