Taking Notes Effectively: Mind Mapping

Self Development : Brain Power

If you are taking notes on a subject, then after the event it can be hard to use a large ream of notes effectively to help you remember and recall what was said and even to revise from if necessary.

That's where a mind map can come in and give you a visual representation of keywords and terms and jog your memory as well as helping you to commit ideas and thoughts to memory.

This technique works better for some than others so it is worth giving a go and seeing if it is a good method for you.

All you do is start with key thoughts in a circle at the centre, then branch out from here and have chaings of sub-headings in other circles and then key points underneath each sub-point.

The net result will be a network of circles and key points.

These are useful because they show a lot of information visually, without many words, and help you map the relation and association between each aspect under a particular subject.

Many find they can re-call the shape of such mind maps at a later date and that helps them compute the information they need and also which sub-section a particular exam question, for instance, may be targetting, helping them to focus on getting the right information out of their mind.

After all, just as important as putting information in is recalling information - the process of searching your mind and retrieving an answer from your brains' memory banks, as it were.
