How To Teach Your Child Manners

Miscellaneous

Always set a good example as children usually copy their parents actions.

When your child is 4 or 5 they should be able to realise what you mean whenever you ask them to do something.

Use words like please, thank you, excuse me, I'm sorry, and may I? as early as possible around your child, and encourage them to do the same.

Avoid using swear words around them because they will probably think its ok to do so themselves.

Ask them to address adults with a certain degree of formality such as Miss, Mrs or Mr.

Teach them how to shake hands and greet new people, as well as showing respect for older people, behave quietly in public areas, and avoid interrupting those in existing conversations.

As soon as your child breaks a rule, address is straight away. Dont ignore it or leave it until later or they will never learn.

Praise your child for good behaviour so they have something to look forward to and make more effort into behaving nicely and politely around others.
