Well, the reason is that many search engines take the number of links back to your site as a significant factor in how highly they rate your website. It stands to reason in the main that a site with lots of links to it is a popular and useful site. However things are a little more complicated - generally you want to get links from good quality, long running sites that are on topic with your site. Those from other sites that are irrelevant to your subject matter may not help your ranking and some think it may even hinder. So take the time to get some quality links rather than just going for sheer quantity. After all it is a bit suspicious if a site goes from having no links to thousands overnight!
