The Room Memory System

Self Development : Brain Power

The room memory system is a method for building a great memory whereby you use something very familliar to yourself in order to help you store and remember things.

Thus the obvious thing to use is your house, but of course for larger lists you could equally use something else you know well - perhaps the different rooms at school for instance (if relevant!)

Anyway, the key idea is that you associate each item that you need to remember with a particular room.

Since the journey between rooms and the rooms in the house you know easily, they act as a trigger for the items. Thus you imagine walking through the rooms of the house, and this brings back the assocation with each of the items.

Thus to use the analogy of the shopping list from the linking item in this section, imagine again you were remembering a list of twelve or so items, including bread and cheese.

You could wake up in the morning only to find it almost impossible to get out of bed because there was a massive loaf of bread on the bottom of the bed!

On getting up and drawing back the curtains, you look outside to be astonished because your garden no longer has grass growing in it, but rather has thousands of small strands of cheese growing out of the ground!

Vivid images like this combined with a familiar route or journey can make it much easier to remember things.
