How To Thread A Needle

Miscellaneous

Before you can begin even the simples of sewing projects, if you are doing it by hand you need to choose an appropriate needle and thread, then thread the needle. The thread should be a shade darker than the material you are sewing if you can't find one that it the exact shade.

Never work with a piece of thread longer than 24 inches as it will get tangled and get in the way of your work. The needle should be small enough to slide in and out of the fabric you are using, so the thicker the fabric, the stronger the needle should be so that it doesn't bend or get stuck.

When you are threading the needle, dampen the end of the thread then pass it through the eye of the needle - if you dampen it it should go through more easily. Pull it through until there is a tail of thread a few inches long, and then go to the other end to tie a knot so that the thread doesn't keep slipping right through every time you sew a stitch and forcing you to begin again each time.

Using your thumb and forefinger take this other end and wrap it around the forefinger a few times, them move this down to the bottom of your thumb and push it off your forefinger so that you have a loop, and pull it so that a knot forms.
