When you are performing stretching exercises you should ensure that you never jerk, and never strain the movements further than needed to feel a stretch. As soon as you can feel the stretch it is effective and there is no need to twist or rotate any further!
When stretching, count to yourself the number so you know how long you have held the position for.
THe other benefit of this is that it also helps you with your breathing and keeping breathing natural whilst you are performing all the stretches, particularly the more contorted of positions!
