How To Toast A Marshmallow Safely

Food And Drink : Desserts

When you go camping it is often traditional to have roasted marshmallows. There is a knack to roasting them over a campfire though. First of all, you have to find a long stick or long-handled fork with which to spear the marshmallow, but if you are using a stick you have to be sure it is clean and not from any dangerous plants. If in doubt don't use it, it isn't worth it. Take care if using a metal fork though, as the heat can travel and cause the implement to become quite hot.

You can roast a couple at a time by pressing them onto the end of the stick or fork. You should aim the bottom marshmallow towards the heat source and hold it about 3 inches above. When it begins to turn a golden brown colour on the side facing the heat, you should turn the stick or fork so that the heat is spread evenly and allowed to cook the whole marshmallow. When it is golden brown all the way round, take it away from the fire and slide it off when it is cool enough - be very careful when you do this as it does get very hot.

Take care not to overcook the marshmallow or else it will melt completely and fall into the fire. If you want it very burnt, let it catch the flame for a few seconds then remove it from the fire, blow it out and it should have turned a much darker colour than normal.
