How To Understand Google Pagerank
Computing : Web Sites If you have the Google toolbar, you will know about pagerank It's the bar called PageRank in the toolbar that ranks a page from 1 to 10. Pages without a rank register 0. Google.com gets 10, and most other pages something in between. Whilst many chase pagerank as the holy grail, it actually does not impact your ability to get listed on a search engine, and your pages can display in Google even with no pagerank. So what is pagerank? It is supposed to be a measure of the importance of your page online, and therein lies the key to why it is independent of your listing. Say you search for something very specific, such as "arguments for moral fictionalism in philosophy" You want RELEVANT results to appear. You do not care how 'important' the pages that are returned are. After all, a page may be excellent in content, but be very specialist or new and therefore have no links from elsewhere. This does not impinge on its relevance to you. Similarly therefore, pages with no pagerank can appear on any search phrase, as long as the page is in the search engine index.
