How To Understand Hockey

Sport : Hockey

Hockey consists of two teams of 11 players each of which will be split up into two types of position: defensive and offensive. The game is also split into 2 halves lasting 30 minutes each. The aim of the game is to get the ball into the opponent's goal, by passing, dribbling and hitting the ball with a stick.

On the playing field, the goal is at either end and there is a striking circle in front of each. The striking circle is important because for a goal to count, the person whose stick hit it into the goal has to have been in this circle.

To put the ball into play, you start in the midfield circle which is at the half line - this happens at the start of play and after every goal. The game begins when the ball is passed to a teammate.

The positions in hockey are something you should learn right from the start, in order to fully understand what each player's job is. The majority of attacking is done by the forwards who are the front line offence.

Midfielders offer attack support to offence positions, and are the first line of defence. Fullbacks are the other defenders and the goalkeeper must keep the ball out of the goal.

There are various penalties involved and the referee can use these on the opposing team if you commit a foul or vice versa.
