How To Understand Oxidation
| Education : Chemistry Many get confused as to what oxidation is, but look at the first three letters - OXI. This is the clue! Oxidation is the ADDITION of oxygen.
More chemistry revision adviceAddition of oxygen does not mean always oxidation. In the reaction: 2F2 + O2 = 2OF2, addition of oxygen is reduction. In the true sense, release of electron is oxidation. In other words, the increase of oxidation number is oxidation. In the above reaction, the oxidation number of 'O' increases from 0 to +2.'O' releases 2 electrons.
