Oxidation is the ADDITION of oxygen.

Addition of oxygen does not mean always oxidation. In the reaction: 2F2 + O2 = 2OF2, addition of oxygen is reduction. In the true sense, release of electron is oxidation. In other words, the increase of oxidation number is oxidation. In the above reaction, the oxidation number of 'O' increases from 0 to +2.'O' releases 2 electrons.
