How To Understand The Bible

Religion And Culture : Christianity

Many people get hung up on a word for word literal understanding of the Bible and therefore get quite confused. But the Book is full of allegory and metaphors and requires a more sophisticated reading than that at face value.

Remember to that it is composed of separate and often quite disparate books, written by different people at different times with different viewpoints, experiences and even motives for writing.

The best place to start is to concentrate on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - these are the synoptic Gospels and record the life of Jesus' whilst on earth.

Once you have done that, then by all means read the other books by other writers. Try to think around what is written and what the real message is underneath the words and often harsh language or graphic imagery created on the page.
