Understanding Contrapposto In Art

Hobbies : Art

When you study any subject, there are many unique words and phrases to describe different techniques and attitudes to painting.

One of these is known as contrapposto, and it was prevalent in High Renaissance art in the 16th century.

The technique refers to the practice of having the lower body, hips and legs pointing in one direction, whilst the shoulders and chest twist to point in the other way.

The name contrapposto gives a clue to this - contra against and posto as in posture.
