Understanding Donor Portraits

Hobbies : Art

You might hear the term donor portrait used in discussion about art and artists.

A donor portrait refers to one in which the patron and at times his family are actually included in the painting that has been commissioned.

The most usual way they are included is as figures in the crowd or audience of some religious event.

This is particularly prevalent in renaissance art, and it is interesting to think when looking at the crowd in such scenes that the faces looking back at you might be representations of those who commissioned the very piece of art that you are looking at!
