Understanding Leg Muscles

Health And Fitness : Exercise Guide

If you have seen fitness videos, or ever been involved at sport in a reasonable level, you will have been blinded by science - with all the technical names for all the muscles in the body.

Most confusing for many are those around the leg and butt, and which is which. You hear people straining this muscle and that muscle and are never quite sure which is which!

Here are three things that you might heard referred to often:

1) The 'Quads' or quadriceps. These are the muscles that straighten the knee

2) The 'Hammies' - your hamstring. This is a classic muscle to strain or go when you haven't warmed up properly, particularly in sports like football.

This muscle group is used to bend the knee.

3) The gastrocnemius. This one might not be mentioned so much, but is very important as it is the major calf muscle, and its function effectively is to pull your toes down! Quite useful really!
