How To Use A Rhetorical Question

A rhetorical question is not one that is supposed to be answered: rather it is a technique that authors use to try and make you think about their point, or to re-emphasise their point.

For instance, if you state a fact such as:

"the government has spent millions of pounds on space travel"

...and you want to argue it's a waste of money, you might add the rhetorical question at the end
"...is this a worthwhile use of budget?"

It is supposed to make you think, yes, it's a waste of money!
