The reason for this is simple: the sprinkler will use more water in an hour as a very large family - one of around six people - will use in a whole day! Therefore think carefully about whether you really need a sprinkler; usually the answer is no. Remember in a hosepipe ban too that sprinklers are included in that ban. And also, you should always have a water meter fitted when you use a sprinkler, which should also incentivise you not to leave it on for hours at a time when you go out!
