Use Food To Improve Sleep

Health And Fitness : Top Health Tips

Certain foods increase the production of serotonin in your body. This is the chemical which makes you feel sleepy. Food types to go for include high carbohydrate fruits, for example apples, pears, and bananas, and whole grain crackers and whole grain breads. Carbs quickly increase blood insulin levels, therefore triggering tryptophan, which is the amino acid which produces serotonin.

Turkey and nuts may also help as they have high levels of protein and fats which also raise blood insulin levels, but they do take longer than carbs. These are best eaten four hours before bed.

Warm milk before bed works too. Dairy is a good source of tryptophan. Herbal green teas containing chamomile or peppermint can induce sleep aswell, so these are other great drinks to sip in the evening.

However, avoid caffeine, chocolate and alcohol as these can cause problems with sleep. If you suffer from bad insomnia, do not consume these throughout the day at all, and it may make an improvement to your sleep patterns. Log everything and see if it changes.
