How To Use Neutralisers

Self Development : Success

A neutraliser is a term for something we develop to help ourselves overcome negative experiences.

A classic example is with promotion at work - say you get passed up on it.

Many would react by beating themselves up internally - they are just not good enough, they did not deserve the job, everyone else is so much better, and so on.

However, a neutraliser is simply putting a different spin on it - something neutral, that is neither good or bad.

For instance, if you say "It wasn't meant to be" and bring in the concept of fate or destiny then you are neutralising the situation effectively, and won't feel so guilty about it.

Therefore this is a useful angle to place on negative events and reduce any impact they may have on you or your confidence.
