Well it is one of those rare occasions where the name is actually quite descriptive - it is marketing that spreads as quickly as a virus does. The key is that unlike traditional marketing there is no large advertising spend, apart from perhaps developing the concept. The point is that people, the consumers, spread the message rather than the company. For instance a free and great fun online game would be a classic example of a viral - its free and fun so people send the link to their friends, but in the process advertising the product for the company without them spending on the marketing.
