What Is Chaos Theory

Philosophy : Philosophy Definitions

Chaos theory is often illustrated with the idea that a butterfly flapping its wings in the 'middle of nowhere' can result in massive effects elsewhere - tidal waves, winds and so on.

The actual definition of chaos theory is quite dry and doesn't necessarily enlighten you a lot:

"the theory of non-linear functions, such that small differences in the input of the function can result in large and unpredictable differences in the output."

Essentially chaos theory states that small changes that may be considered insignificant on one side of the equation can actually have massive, and strange and unpredictable, consequences, on the other side of the equation.
