If someone has done a trip similar to that you are planning then their advice as someone who has been there and done that can be invaluable for you. There is no real source for checking how safe different companies are, but there are many travel blogs and sites and student gap year sites that may be able to give you a general impression, though always be aware that individual stories are not necessarily reliable though general trends and patterns you spot are more likely to be.
