Why People Don't Increase Their Salary

Career : Salary

There are various factors as to why people don't increase their salary, but for good performers there is one big reason. That is, they don't ask and are too modest about their performance.

This is a shame, because you will find and get frustrated that those who don't perform quite so well but are excellent at managing their reputation get all the reward, and mainly down to perceptions of their performance rather than what they actually achieved.

It is a known fact that in most large companies where there is a set performance process in place, it is not actually those who perform the best who get the reward but those who are perceived to perform the best.

So what can you do? Well, the key is to be less modest about your performance. Everytime you do something well and something good for the team, hammer the point home with your boss and any other decision makers in the team.

Whilst this might feel awkward at first, remember that other team members will be doing this naturally, and when it comes to pay increase time, they will remember what you say you have done.

It's a sad fact but those who get on quietly with their work and put in a great performance won't be noticed by the majority of line managers in larger companies, who are often too busy hitting their own targets and doing their work than actually noticing what their staff are doing.
