Why We Sing Carols At Christmas

Christmas

Carols and Christmas go naturally together don't they?

We are so used to assocating the two that we just assume that things have always been like this.

However it is actually the case that there were barely any carols around until about the mid 19th century so they are actually a relatively recent addition to the Christmas tradition.

There was an intense period in the mid 19th century when lots of them were created by composers, and some of them also come from America such as we three kings of orient are.

Away in a Manger was also written in America.

Christmas carols have been here firmly to stay ever since with some wonderful annual performances such as those at Kings College Cambridge each year - Carols from Kings.
