How To Win Photography Competitions

Hobbies : Photography

First things first - you will no doubt have to enter many competitions to win one.

So the first major tip is to enter all the competitions that you can and increase your chances.

The second reason for this is simply that you will improve over time and develop a feel for what works well.

On that theme, the next tip is to look at past competitions in the magazine. What sort of images have the judges gone for in the past? Most judges have a soft spot for a particular type of composition or effect, so you can give yourself a head start by using similar effects in your images.

One of the hardest parts is getting inspiration when working to a brief.

If the theme is 'shadow' for instance, how do you get inspiration?

One of the best ways is through doing a simple word connection exercise.

Start with the theme at the top of the page, and write down all the words that it makes you think about.

Aim to get 10 - 20 words down on paper. Then from that list, see if there is anything tangible that you can shoot - and then, well, the rest is down to you!
