How To Wipe All Data From Your Hard Drive

Computing : Software

If you want to wipe all data from your hard drive, then you can't just use the standard deletion methods.

Technically when most machines say they are deleting files, all they really do to speed things up is not scramble the data on that section of the disk but simply remove the information attached to the file, in other words they remove the marker from that file, but it may still be recoverable until that sector is written to again.

However there is open source software (therefore free) that you can use to securely remove or wipe the data from a drive, or several drives.

The project is DBAN, here: http://dban.sourceforge.net/
